Tigers roar stymied by South Panthers

ANSONIA- There are times when no matter how much effort a team puts forth on the floor, the end result is not what was originally expected.

With the Arcanum-Ft. Recovery game having been cancelled Tuesday, Ansonia was the only place in the county where there was a game.

Then again, it was a game by name only.

Ansonia senior Dalton Subler was the only one with game the Tigers had on the floor against Twin Valley South. Subler scored 21 points and snatched down 10 rebounds as the Tigers were stymied by the Panthers, 70-42, in Cross County Conference action.

It was a very subdued Darrick Barga after the loss.

“We lacked emotion and the energy we needed throughout the night to compete,” said Barga. “South came in and dictated both ends of the floor and we could not overcome.”

At the end of the opening eight minutes, the Tigers trailed, 19-11.

That would be as close as the Tigers would get the rest of the night.

By the time the intermission had rolled in, Ansonia was down, 32-19 and Subler owned 16 of the Ansonia 19 points.

“Dalton carried us in the first half,” said Barga. “He did a great job and the guys did a great job findind him. We just couldn’t get another player to step up and get some buckets for us to get us over that hump scoring wise.”

On defense, the Panthers hit the Tigers with a man press that had Ansonia in a whirl.

By games end, Ansonia had committed 21 turnovers.

“Their press hurt us and we turned the ball over way to many times,” admitted Barga. “We just never got in the flow offensively what so ever and that hurt us. When we ran half court stuff, we weren’t sharp. We weren’t executing at a high level. We had little thing happening that should not be happening in January.”

On both ends of the floor, South proved to be superior.

“They were a step or two quicker than us,” Barga stated. “Again, just not being prepared to play. We had a couple of sick kids but you have to be able to bring it. We didn’t have a hundred percent effort tonight. We’re struggling to get there every night. We can do it but we just have to have that mindset to do it.”

With the loss, the Tigers fall to 3-6 on the season and 1-3 in the conference.

Ansonia will travel to Arcanum Friday to do battle with the Trojans before returning home Saturday to face Mississinawa Valley.
