Greenville girls self-destruct in loss to Covington

GREENVILLE- When basketball is played properly by two teams, it is a sport like no other.

Playing the game properly is something Greenville Lady Wave coach Rachel Kerns would like to see.

Monday, Greenville fans watched Covington dismantle their team to the tune of 68-19.

Jumping out to a 18-0 run to start the game, Greenville never seen its first points of the game until the 4.6 second mark of the opening frame when junior Chloe McKinney connected.

By the end of the half, things never improved as the Wave walked off the court trailing 31-13.

This is one of our worse outings of the year,” said Kerns. “Our effort, intensity and desire to want to play, we just didn’t bring it tonight. This is a hard one.”

With Covington hitting 11 of 27 shots from outside the three point line, Greenville’s never zeroed in on the reality of the Buccs offense. With Carly Shell hitting on five triples, 19 points total, the Buccs were deadly.

“We were going to make numbers 30 (Jessie Crowel- three treys-18 points) and 20 (Cassidy Cain-1 trey and seven points) beat us and number three (Shell) stepped up in the first half. Still, that is no excuse. The way we’ve been practicing and preparing, there is no excuse for us to come out here and play like this.”

On the flip side, Greenville had 33 turnovers, shooting itself in the foot with nearly every possession.

“Thirty-three turnovers. What am I supposed to say about that,” Kerns quipped. “I can’t say they (Covington) forced 33 turnovers. We do a really good job of making unforced turnovers for whatever reason. That was one of our points before the game started. We couldn’t have any silly turnovers and we had our fair share of them. The girls didn’t want the ball today.”

Now with Covington behind them, Greenville will jump out of the frying pan and into the fire tonight as state ranked Sidney come to town for a GWOC North game.

“It’s a good thing I’ve got 20 hours before I go into practice Wednesday to figure out what I’m going to say,” Kerns stated. “Thursday we don’t talk about how it’s a game we can win but how we can improve. I don’t know. Sidney is very, very good.”
