Tigers get some good news afterwards

VERSAILLES- If the Versailles Tigers expected to keep pace in the Midwestern Athletic Conference, a win over rival St. Henry was a must.

That crucial victory was never really in doubt Thursday as Versailles rolled to a 49-25 victory over the Lady Redskins.

Then came the unexpected.

It hadn’t been that long ago when New Knoxville upended Versailles in a conference game, dropping a huge loss on the Tigers in the MAC.

Thursday, Versailles coach Jackie Stonebreaker received word the Marion Local had beat New Knoxville, putting the Tigers right back in the hunt for a MAC championship.

“We’re right back in it,” said Stonebreaker after the game with a smile. “We control our own destiny now. Tonight, we got some help from Marion Local and right now, they are my favorite team in the conference. At least for two week anyhow.”

Led by senior Krista Puthoff with a dozen points and 10 from freshman Kami McEldowney, the Tigers jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first frame before the Redskins were able to score on a trey by junior Ellie Stammen at the 1:46 mark of the quarter and a 12-3 lead after one.

Versailles would turn up the heat on offense in the second eight minutes and would take a 21-9 lead at the break.

Even though Puthoff would lead all in scoring at the end of the game, those points didn’t come easy in the beginning.

“”We had a hard time getting the ball to Krista in the first quarter to a quarter and a half,” said Stonebreaker. “We had to go to a four out and cross on the baseline to get the ball to her.”

Up 31-15 with three quarters in the books, the only thing left to be determined was the final score.

With the offense clicking and the defense doing its job, there were other things that had the attention of the longtime coach.

“I was very happy with the fact that we allowed only three offensive rebounds during the game,” said Stonebreaker.

Versailles will be idle until next Thursday when the Tigers (10-3, 4-1) will travel to Ft. Recovery.

“We have a week off before our next game,” said Stonebreaker. “We will take a hour for practice Friday and an hour Saturday for a shoot around.”

If everything stays status quo, the Tigers will battle Marion Local on January 29 at home in a crucial game that will determine the conference title.
