UNION CITY- Pink night at Mississinawa Valley wasn’t quite as rosy as head coach Patrick Baker or the Hawk faithful had hoped it would be.

When it comes to big rivalry games in Darke County, there is none bigger than Ansonia and Mississinawa Valley.

Friday, the Tigers traveled west to take on the Blackhawks and it was the Tigers doing all the celebrating, posting a lopsided 44-8 Cross County Conference victory.

It didn’t take long for that Tigers to show their dominance as Ansonia ran only seven plays in 3:11, capped off by a 22 yard run by senior Cody Brumfield. The two point conversion would prove to be good and the Tigers held the 8-0 lead.

When the Hawks took their first possession, it looked like the rivalry would be in full swing as Mississinawa Valley would move the ball virtually at will against the Tigers defense.

Then, the Hawks would make a huge blunder as senior Nathan Rammel would fumble the ball on the six yard line.

On the second play of the drive, senior quarterback Dane Wentworth would rumble 61 yards for the score with 45 seconds remaining in the frame, giving the Tigers a commanding 14-0 advantage.

Ansonia senior Nick Buckingham would get a three yard score at the 11:15 mark of the half while sophomore Aydan Sanders would put the Tigers up 28-0 on a five yard run with 1:49 left before the break.

As both teams entered the break, the only thing hotter than the Tigers was the boiling blood of Hawks coach Patrick Baker.

Looking to change things around in the third, MV looked to get the ship pointed in the right direction but it was another lost opportunity as MV would fumble the ball away as the Hawks were looking for a third quarter repeat of a week ago at National Trail.

The comeback was far from realistic as the Tigers held a 44-0 lead heading into the final frame.

“Against National Trail a week ago we came out in the third quarter and made a game of it,” said Baker. “I thought our guys would be able to respond in the second half, but we just couldn’t do it tonight.

Mississinawa Valley would final dent the scoreboard at the 3:19 mark of the final stanza when Zach Dirmeyer caught an Andrew Johns pass for a 33 yard score and the 44-8 final score.

It would prove to be one costly penality after another for the Hawks as MV would consistently shoot itself in the foot.

“The penalties are really hurting this team.” said Baker. “You look up and it’s a second and 20 situation time and time again, and that is hard to overcome. It’s those little things in our program that we have to fix. We have a long way to go … but I told the kids one way or another we are going to fix it and get this program going in the right direction,”

With both teams having dismal seasons, the Tigers were able to pick up win number two on the season and the first conference win of 2015.

Long time Ansonia coach Eugene Hoening, couldn’t have been mor happy with his team on both sides of the line.

“We just executed our offense; that’s just what we do.” Hoening said. “I have to hand it to our coaching staff, they did a good job of keeping our kids focused and preparing them for the game this week, and the kids responded. We do a lot of sled work and coach Adam Hall, well, he harps on coming off the ball and sprinting to the line of scrimmage, and that’s a credit to coach Hall,”

On defense, Hoening talked about Matt Macy, the defensive coach.

“Coach Matt Macy did a heck of a job of adjusting our defense this week, and he gets a lot of credit for the work he put in and the defensive effort tonight,” Hoening concluded.

Looking for its first win of the season, the Hawks will travel to Arcanum Friday while the Tigers will host Bethel for its senior night.
