Little ones shine at annual fair cheer competition

GREENVILLE- They are the youngest of the bunch at the annual Darke County Fair cheer competition.

The little ones from Greenville didn’t win top honors in their division, but they may show the most heart of them all. Trying to get them to talk to a voice recorder is next to impossible but they do their talking on the cheering mat in front of the judges.

“This is only my first year of cheering but I love it,” said nine-year-old Isabella Gulley. “I love my coach and the rest of my team. It’s a lot of fun to be able to cheer for my school. I think that’s what is the most important to me. She’s the best coach I ever had.”

While Gulley is the new kid on the block, Sarah Hollopeter has been at it for five years and started at the age of five. According to the 10-year-old, a lot of work went into the Wave routine.

“We started on our routine for the fair in June,” said Hollopeter. “Our coach is wonderful and I’m glad she will take the time to teach us every day. She takes time away from her life for us. She makes sure we have our uniforms and pays for a lot of things out of her own money. We love her.”

“I think it’s great to be able to cheer for my school,” said Kaylin Stahl. “For me, it’s all about the school.”

With tears in her eyes, Coach Krystalyn Bush was nearly speechless after hearing what her girls said.

“These kids are wonderful,” said Bush. “It’s very time consuming but these girls have tried very hard this year and I’m very proud of them.”

Even though Bush volunteers her time with the young cheer squad, it pays her back in other ways.

“These kids are the best and it’s very rewarding to see them do what they do.” Bush stated. “They work hard and they listen to me and what I want them to do. I love them all to death”

The response from the kids?

“We love her to. We want to cheer through high school. We love it and it’s because of our coach. ”
