Versailles varsity teams compete in Pioneer Classic Tournament

Lady Tiger Bowlers 4th at the Pioneer Classic Tournament

On Monday January 18th the Lady Tiger Bowlers went to Lima and competed in the Pioneer Classic Tournament at Westgate Lanes. They were invited to bowl with 16 of Ohio’s best teams at this tournament. The bowlers competed as a team with a format of 3 regular games with 5 baker games followed by a cut to the top 8.  After the cut the format changed to a best out of 5 baker game match play.  The Tigers bowled well to start with a team score of 3221 and were 5th out of the top 8 after the first cut.  Regular game scores were: 773, 817, and 786.  The leading scores for the Tigers came from Makenzie Berning (174, 179, 191: 541 series), Hannah Niekamp (161, 205, 155: 521 series), and Brigette Holsapple (160, 169, 169: 498 series). “The lane conditions were challenging, drying up quick and forcing the girls to make appropriate adjustments.  I felt like the girls handled this challenge well,” said Coach Phlipot.

After the cut the Tigers took on Napolaen, OH in match play baker format.  Scores were: 150(V)-159(N), 140(V)-136(N), 129(V)-179(N), 179(V)-157(N), and 191(V)-149(N).  Freshman, Morgan Barlage was able to step in and bowl well in all of the baker games.

In the semi-final match the Tigers bowled against Troy.  Scores were: 136(V)-177(T), 143(V)-184(T), 153(V)-175(T). “Again, we were unable to finish with our spare game but the girls should be proud to finish 4th among 16 great schools including 2 from Division 1 and 2 defending State Champion squads.  Our game will continue to come together if the girls make a strong effort to focus in these next few weeks at practice,” said Coach Phlipot.

Winning the tournament was Troy beating Coldwater in 5 baker games.

Varsity Boys Bowling Compete at Pioneer Classic

On January 18th the Boy’s Bowling team traveled to Lima, OH to compete at the Pioneer Classic tournament with the top 16 teams in Ohio.  They finished 12th overall. The boys bowled 3 regular games followed by 5 baker games all as a team. Their score after the first round was 3354. This score unfortunately did not meet the cut. “The Varsity Boys have not been able to bowl in a tournament situation like this one yet this season.  Regardless of their final ranking, this tournament play provides a great experience and practice heading into the end of the season. A tournament environment is very different than regular season play,” said Coach Mike Groff.  High scores for the Tigers included Alex Groff (187, 216, 190: 593 series), Kyle Cotner (190, 161, 205: 556 series), and Jacob Wening (168, 166, 162: 496 series).  Team baker scores: 174, 156, 191, 163, and 146.

Winning the tournament was St Marys beating Napoleon in 5 games in the finals.
