GREENVILLE- With only one senior on the varsity squad, the Greenville Lady Wave tennis team is making a very strong statement.

Coming in with an 8-1 seasonal record, the young Wave topped a senior heavy Fairborn team, 5-0.

“We played very well tonight,” said Wave coach Jim Koontz. “Everyone had a good night and I’m pleased with the way they played. They (Fairborn) are all seniors and my girls played with a lot of pride tonight.”

Led by freshman Natalie Milligan (1st singles) the Wave cruised throught the Skyhawks.

“Natlie played extremely well tonight,” said Koontz. “I thought the girl from Fairborn was a very good player. She had Natalie down 4-2 and Natalie came back to win, 6-4 and 6-0. So she won 10 straight games to come back and win tonight. That was big there. The rest of the team stepped up and took control of their matches.”

With three freshman, two sophomores and a senior (Molly Hunt), the Lady Wave show no fear when it comes to the opposition.

“These kids are gaining more confidence and are believing in themselves,” Koontz pointed out. “The girls are in pretty good shape and they played well in the off season. Some of the parents played when they were in school so the parents have been working with them from a young age. This is just a good group of kids and they just keep working at it.”

Looking down the road, Koontz sees positive things from his kids.

“If they keep working at it, these kids can go to districts or beyond,” Koontz stated. “They can go as far as they want to. They are the type of kids that are very talented and they work hard. They are young and they have something to prove.”

With nearly half the season in the books, the worst is yet to come.

“We’ll be getting into the meat of our schedule soon,” Koontz pointed out. “We have Troy, Butler and Tipp coming up soon and if we look to win the conference, these are the teams for us to beat. Troy has all seniors and Tipp City is very good. Butler has been our biggest thorn in the past so we have three stiff tests coming up in the future.”

The Wave hosted Sidney Wednesday then Troy on Thursday.
