Bahamas!

Courtney’s ‘Vicarious Voyage’ Around the World
By Courtney De Schepper

Hello from the Bahamas! It is absolutely beautiful here! I cannot believe that I am here in the middle of January while it is very cold in Ohio where I am used to spending my winters. Currently in the Bahamas it is mid 70’s. I spent from January 14th-19th in the Bahamas. The island is relatively flat and surrounded by nothing but white sand and flawless blue ocean. It was one of the most beautiful sites I have ever seen.

While in the Bahamas I was surprised to see how developed for tourism it was. Of course while we were there there were many cruise ships in port which made for an abundant amount of tourists. Paradise Island, just off the main island of Nassau, was probably the most developed simply because of the hotel Atlantis. The main island in parts was very developed while other parts were under developed (these places are mostly where the natives live). In general though, the island was absolutely beautiful.

Most of the time here was somewhat of a vacation for me and my mother. I spent most of my time on the beaches of the island, visiting Atlantis, and doing some shopping. One place we went shopping was a place called the Straw Market. The Straw Market is place where locals can sell their handmade crafts to the tourists. It was so interesting to see all of the different levels of crafts under one roof.

I think the best part of the trip was at the very beginning. When we were flying to the Bahamas it was breath taking to see us slowly come upon the islands of the Bahamas. As you get closer to the islands you can begin to see the homes, all of which are brightly colored, the streets, and even the cars that drive around. I could even begin to see the bridges that connect some of the islands. The island was a great place to start my voyage.

On the 19th of January I boarded the MV Explorer and started my journey around the world. I look forward to sharing my experience with you all. While you are waiting for my next entry you can follow my blog at: agirlaroundtheworld-2012.blogspot.com

Bon Voyage
