Marlowe added yet another achievement to his already impressive resume
as author of “Digging Up the Bones.”
“Digging Up the Bones” follows three generations of an Appalachian
family, spanning the 1960’s to present day. Throughout the book,
readers engage in the lives of numerous characters that are complexly
intertwined. The book’s description reads: “This is not a family–it’s a
world; this is not a book–it’s an indictment; these words are not
written–they’re howled.”
Fellow English department professors honored Marlowe with a special
reading and reception in the Edison State Art Gallery on Tuesday, April
26. As Marlowe read the chapter “The Done Thing,” classic films “I’m
from Arkansas” and “Child Bride” played without sound to contrast
visually those movies’ stereotypical portrayals of rural life with what
Marlowe hopes are more sympathetic stories.
Marlowe went on to explain how readers can apply principles from the
book to everyday life. “It’s great to embrace who you are and
reappropriate negative stereotypes people may have against you or your
culture. In doing so, you rob them of the ability to harm you with
those stereotypes.”
In addition to his role as an Edison State professor, Marlowe is an
attorney and writer who earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from one of
the most respected writing programs in the nation–the Iowa Writers’
Workshop. Marlowe’s work has appeared in numerous publications, and
Roundabout Press recently published his critically acclaimed
short–story collection, “Digging Up The Bones.”
A guest musician and student in Marlowe’s class, Isaac Newhouse,
performed prior to the reading and light refreshments were served. A
crowd of nearly seventy from the campus community attended to support
Marlowe.
