Remember When…
Gold Mine!
By Kim Smith

In spite of the fact that we had no television or electronics, my brother and I were NEVER bored. We never laid around the house whining , “Oh, boo-hoo, there’s nothing to do!” In fact, there weren’t enough hours in the day to accomplish all of our self-created projects!

One sunny day, we came up with a new idea. We went outside, grabbed two shovels, and began to dig down into a spot in the back-yard. What was our plan? Why, to dig a hole to China, of course! But you already knew that, didn’t you!

We dug, and we dug, and we dug some more. Phew! It was hard ground, and a hard job!

Finally, it was supper-time, and not only had we worked up quite an appetite, we looked at each other with great relief and said, “Let’s finish our project tomorrow!”

My brother and I didn’t just eat supper…we ate a BIG supper! My mother’s hope that there would be left-overs for tomorrow vanished as she watched us shoveling our food into our mouths!

After we had filled our bellies, then washed and dried the dishes, we stretched-out on the living-room floor. The next thing we knew…>BANG<!! We were out like a light! Mom had to practically drag us to bed, we were so tired!

After breakfast the next morning, we were ready to go at it again! Sooo…we dug, and we dug and we dug some more. We were making some real head-way. We could just see little China-men jumping up through our hole, with their round, pointed hats! But then, something else happened. Was it little China-men? Nooo. All of a sudden, water began to gush upwards, a-bubbling and a-boiling! We had hit a gold-mine—of water! Without intending to, we had dug a well!

The next morning, sad to say, we were ordered to take our shovels and fill up the hole.

Thus ends the tale of the hole to China!

Blessings to you all!
