Scholarships available for “Earn While You Learn” EMT classes

As the nation celebrates National EMS Week, themed “We Care. For Everyone,” it serves as a poignant reminder of the growing demand for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) professionals in our communities. This year’s observance highlights not only the contributions of EMS providers but also the pressing challenges they face, particularly in light of the current workforce shortage across the United States.

In light of this growing demand for qualified EMS personnel, Spirit EMS is proud to announce the launch of an additional paid EMT training course. This initiative aims to equip aspiring EMTs with the vital skills necessary to thrive in a field currently grappling with significant workforce shortages. According to recent statistics, experts estimate that the U.S. could face a shortfall of over 70,000 emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics by 2026, making the need for comprehensive training programs more critical than ever.

Spirit EMS will provide these courses at its satellite facility in Defiance and its established education center in Greenville in partnership with Four County Career Center. This strategic expansion is a testament to Spirit EMS’s commitment to enhancing emergency medical services throughout Ohio and Indiana, particularly as the state braces for a projected shortage of EMTs and paramedics in the years to come.

Brian K. Hathaway, President and CEO of Spirit EMS, stated, “The need for skilled EMS professionals has reached an all-time high. We are excited to create pathways for individuals to enter this fulfilling career and make a significant impact in their communities. Our program not only prepares students to tackle the challenges of emergency response but also rewards their dedication and hard work through tangible benefits.”

Classes this summer will run from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and are scheduled to begin on June 16 and conclude on July 25, 2025. Upon completing the course, students will take the National Registry exam and participate in a month of field training provided by Spirit EMS, followed by a period of working alongside a partner on an ambulance.

“Our mission extends beyond teaching the essentials of emergency medical services; we strive to celebrate each student’s accomplishments along their journey,” Hathaway added. “Research clearly shows a strong correlation between classroom involvement and long-term career success.”

Since August 2017, Spirit EMS has invested over $1 million in local education through its scholarship fund, aiming to cultivate a new generation of EMTs and paramedics. This investment directly addresses the urgent need for qualified emergency personnel in southwestern Ohio and eastern Indiana, particularly in regions experiencing high demand for Spirit’s services.

Hathaway further explained, “At Spirit EMS, we are committed to nurturing a workforce that is not only highly skilled but also dedicated to fostering positive change in their communities. The requirement for competent EMS professionals is critical, and we are devoted to providing thorough training and support to ensure our graduates are fully equipped for vital roles.”

Prospective students are highly encouraged to apply for the EMT scholarship program, which necessitates completing the course, securing national certification, and committing to 2,080 hours of full-time service with Spirit EMS. Graduates will also receive a month of paid on-the-job training post-certification.
