Columbus, OH – Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has announced the reappointment of Brian K. Hathaway, President and CEO of Spirit EMS in Greenville, to the State Board of Emergency Medical, Fire, and Transportation Services (EMFTS). Hathaway’s new term began on May 2 and will continue until November 12, 2026.

The EMFTS is responsible for several key functions, including:

– Establishing training and certification standards for emergency medical services personnel

– Accrediting EMS training programs

– Approving continuing education sites for EMS providers

– Overseeing Ohio’s trauma system

– Managing the EMS grant program, which provides funding for training, equipment, and research initiatives

– Coordinating the Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) program

– Licensing medical transportation services in Ohio

– Facilitating the coordination of Regional Physician Advisory Boards

– Collecting and analyzing data from the EMS Incident Reporting System and the Ohio Trauma Registry

– Conducting investigations to ensure compliance with the Ohio Revised and Administrative Codes

The board comprises 21 members representing diverse sectors, including fire and emergency medical services, private medical transportation, mobile intensive care providers, air medical services, trauma programs, hospitals, emergency physicians, EMS training programs, and the Ohio Department of Public Safety. The board’s work is conducted through specialized committees.

Reflecting on his reappointment, Hathaway remarked, “It’s been an honor to serve on the board these past few years, and I look forward to my continued service as an advocate for all providers and organizations in the state while always maintaining a commitment to ensure the very best for the citizens of the great state of Ohio.”

Hathaway had the privilege of participating in a panel last year that contributed to the development of the board’s strategic plan for the next five years.

“We have a great board with exceptional leadership and a vision to advance EMS into the next century. I encourage others in the EMS community to volunteer for workgroups to assist the board in building a bright future for those we’ve pledged to serve in Ohio. As the saying goes, many hands make light work; in this case, it’s many voices that turn great ideas into tomorrow’s reality,” he said.

Hathaway emphasized that many of the board’s initiatives stem from the dedicated work of its committees. Individuals interested in joining a committee and undergoing the vetting process can find more information on the Ohio EMS website: https://ems.ohio.gov/about-us/committees.

In addition to his board duties, Hathaway serves on the state-level medical transportation committee and is an active member of the Ohio Ambulance and Medical Transportation Association, where he holds dual roles as a board member and education chairman.
