The Edison State Community College Art Department will feature artist Sarah Brashears during its May exhibition. The department will display the exhibit, “Whisper, but at full volume, those rumors about me,” in the Anne Vaccaro and David Myers Gallery at the Piqua Campus during normal campus hours from May 12 to May 30, 2025.
“The works in this series have consumed me from tongue to toe,” Brashears said. “The creation of a rumor is a favorite topic of mine to analyze. I like my assemblages to be the beginning of a fact-filled story, enhanced with racy rumors. Some of the work is based on folklore from multiple areas of the world and varying time periods. Some of the work is created strictly from the rumors which wallpaper my brain. All the work is layered in the past and creating it helps me find the future.”
Brashears is an artist, art teacher, partner, mother, daughter, and dreamer. Originally from Rhode Island, she now lives and works in Dayton, Ohio. Brashears has taught visual and performing arts education to students ranging from kindergarten through college. She currently serves as Assistant Professor of Practice in Art Education at the University of Dayton.
She works in found object sculpture, acrylic painting, and mixed media illustration. Brashears’ famous inspirations include Nick Bantock, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Edward Hopper, Vanessa German, and Miriam Schapiro. Her personal inspirations include shadows, dark hallways, birds, her daughter, and two rescue dogs named Poe and Willie Nelson.
