Greenville, OH – Though the upcoming “Water Color on Location: Dynamic Watercolor Compositions with Richard Sneary” workshop has reached full capacity, the public is warmly invited to observe the artists in action as they paint scenes of Greenville’s historic downtown during this three-day plein air event. “Plein Air” is an artform in which artists paint from direct observation outdoors. The artform was made popular by 19th Century Impressionist Artists such as Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro after the invention of portable paint tubes that allowed artists to easily transport their materials outside of a studio space.
From June 10th through 12th, 2025, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm daily, acclaimed watercolorist Richard Sneary will lead a group of artists through the streets and scenic spaces of downtown Greenville as part of a hands-on outdoor workshop hosted by the Anna Bier Gallery.
This is a unique opportunity for residents, visitors, and art enthusiasts to see professional artists at work in real-time, capturing the charm, light, and architecture of Greenville with brush and watercolor.
Sneary, visiting town from Kansas City, MO, is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, and American Impressionists Society, brings a wealth of experience in architectural illustration and outdoor painting. While the workshop is closed to new registrations, the process promises to be a visual treat for passersby and anyone who appreciates the creative process.
Workshop participants will begin each day at indoors before moving outdoors to various locations downtown. If you see the artists outside, the public is encouraged to stop by, observe quietly, and experience the magic of plein air painting — a tradition that blends spontaneity, observation, and environmental inspiration.
“It’s not often you get to watch a nationally recognized artist bring local scenes to life, right in front of your eyes,” said Jennifer Overholser, Artistic Director of Visual Arts at Darke County Center for the Arts. “We’re excited to invite the community to be part of the experience by quietly watching.” Those wishing to observe the artists are encouraged to do so only when they are painting outside.
The Anna Bier Art Gallery is operated as part of Darke County Center for the Arts. This workshop was made possible with support from the Harry Stephens Memorial Foundation. More information can be found at darkecountyarts.org.
