Greenwave Varsity Bowling: Girls finish 13th, boys 14th in Sectional Tournament

On Wednesday, the Greenville Varsity Bowling teams went to their sectional tournament at Poelking Lanes in Kettering.

The girls were looking good in practice and they held true to that.  In game 1, they shot their best team score of the year with a 772, putting them in 10th place which was the last team before cut.  Game 2 showed them doing well again and they put up another season high score with a 781.  Other teams turned up the heat that round and despite doing better, the Lady Wave dropped to 13th place.  While the girls fell off a little bit, they still put up a great score with a 740.  This landed the girls in a solid 13th place for the 3 game series.

The girls enjoyed a lunch break and then moved to their new lane for practice.  They started off the baker games and were posting fairly average scores compared to the year, but it wasn’t enough to move them up.  The gap extended between them and 12th place, but 14th place wasn’t able to get enough pins to move up.  In the final 3 bakers, the girls were able to extend their lead over 14th, but they lost more ground to 12th place.

So the team did well for the day, but it wasn’t enough to get them into the district tournament as a team.  The good news is that we did have 2 bowlers that were able to qualify for the tournament.  Marissa Boney finished 21st overall and was the 4th individual qualifier.  Marissa’s scores consisted of 170, 186 and 180 to give her a series of 536.  Ainsleigh Davidson is also moving on finishing 25th overall and was the 5th individual qualifier.  Ainsleigh shot scores of 203, 167 and 159 for a series of 529.

The girls will represent Greenville at the district tournament on Thursday, February 29th at Beaver-Vu bowl in Beavercreek.  The girls will have the opportunity to qualify for the state tournament in Columbus.  Wish the girls well as they head to represent Greenville.

The boys came out of the gates on fire.  They put up a 919 in game 1 to put them in 8th place out of 27.  They improved on game 2 with a 950 (that’s an average of 190 for 5 bowlers) and game 3 was pretty close with a 934.  After game 3, they landed in 7th place being 83 pins above the cut.

The boys took a break for lunch and were placed on the lanes according to how they  finished after game 3.  They then bowled 6 baker games as a team.  The boys struggled on the new pair and looked like they ran out of gas.  After the 3rd baker game, they had dropped to 11th place and were 10 pins out of the cut.  They struggled to put up big scores and other teams succeeded, the team dropped over 100 pins and landed at 14th place, missing cut by 137 pins.

There were approximately 150 bowlers at the tournament.  There were 10 teams that qualified for the district event next Friday.  While our team didn’t qualify as a team for districts, there were 2 individual qualifiers.  Corbin Frye shot a 235, 202 and a 246 for series of 683, tying him for 4th place overall in the sectional tournament.  Alex Hadden finished 31st overall and was the 7th individual qualifier.  He had scores of 191, 204 and 189 to give him a series of 584.  These boys will bowl 3 games and will have an opportunity to qualify for the state tournament in Columbus.  Best wishes to them as the represent Greenville in the tournament!
