ARS and North Dakota State University researchers are putting facts to whether hempseed cake may be used as a source of protein and fiber in cattle feed without creating CBD or THC residues in edible animal tissues. Without characterization of any CBD and THC residues that might occur, hempseed cake cannot gain legal approval to be used in food animal rations. This information is part of the latest issue of ARS’ Food and Nutrition Research Briefs.

Among other information, the current issue reports:
- ARS researchers found that when healthy adult study participants increased the number of daily servings of minimally processed vegetables to match the level recommended in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, they also increased their Subjective Happiness Scale scores.
- A team of researchers including ARS scientists has developed a new time-saving assay that detects E. coli O157:H7 in ground beef. The test is based on a modified phage—a virus that infects bacteria—which is specific to this strain of pathogenic E. coli.
